José Antonio Ramos Sucre : FROM THE LIVID COUNTRY ”RESIDUE” trans. by Guillermo Parra printed by Auguste Press (2012)
Micah Ballard gifted me this chapbook of translations that he recently printed via Auguste Press ran by himself and his wife Sunnylyn Thibodeaux : I’d never heard of Sucre but after reading through I was constantly thinking Lautréamont (as Micah had also suggested it reminisces) and I was also reminded of the energy exhausted by many other South American poets of that time like one of my favorites Vicente Huidobro : but Sucre stands alone : as w/ “RESIDUE” and the rest of the poems contained here, Sucre digs graves w/ his pens, casts away and reinvites, summons his prose w/ the maximal of words flittered from the catacombs of his own lugubrious sleeplessness : further, the transframe cover art by Andrew Schoultz could just as easily be stared at for centuries w/o ever mustering the desire to shovel the dirt of the grave beneath : but for those that do dig-in, Guillermo Parra has also translated a Selected Works by Sucre published by UNO Press that I’m going to get my hands on eventually
